Queen Bitch

Just call it bitch research day. I’m looking up songs with the word bitch in the title as part of my effort to understand why Google filters the word bitch. I understand they filter the word because it’s classified as inappropriate language, but I’m not convinced they’re not being a bit extreme. They won’t filter the word diffcult, but when someone says “life is a bitch” they’re basically saying that life is difficult. When a woman is called a bitch she’s essentially being called difficult or otherwise unpleasant because she has an attitude that someone else doesn’t like. Usually it’s that the woman isn’t a pushover who allows everybody to walk all over her. She demands respect and takes no one’s bull. She gets what she wants when she wants it.

I do get that the word is filtered because women by and large find it offensive to be called a bitch, but I wonder if they considered why they were being called bitches if women might not conclude that it’s better to be a bitch than a sweetheart?

Here are the lyrics from David Bowie’s song “Queen Bitch”. Interestingly enough, in the song’s lyrics bitch is not referenced. The word only appears in the title. I’m not sure I get what the song’s about though….

Queen Bitch by David Bowie
I’m up on the eleventh floor
And I’m watching the cruisers below
My heart’s in the basement
My weekend’s
at an all time low
He’s down on the street
And he’s trying hard
to pull sister Flo

‘Cause she’s hoping to score
So I can’t see her
letting him go
Walk out of her heart
Walk out of her mind

[CHORUS]
She’s so swishy in her satin and tat
In her frock coat
and bipperty-bopperty hat
Oh God, I could do better than that

She’s an old-time ambassador
Of sweet talking, night walking games
And she’s known in the darkest clubs
For pushing ahead of the dames
If she says she can do it
Then she can do it,
she don’t make false claims
But she’s a Queen,
and such are queens
That your laughter
is sucked in their brains
Now she’s leading him on
And she’ll lay him right down
But it could have been me
Yes, it could have been me
Why didn’t I say,
why didn’t I say, no, no, no

[CHORUS]

So I lay down a while
And I look at my hotel wall
Oh the cot is so cold
It don’t feel like no bed at all
Yeah I lay down a while
And I look at my hotel wall
But he’s down on the street
So I throw both his bags down the hall
And I’m phoning a cab
‘Cause my stomach feels small
There’s a taste in my mouth
And it’s no taste at all

It could have been me
Oh yeah, it could have been me
Why didn’t I say,
Why didn’t I say, no, no, no

[CHORUS]
