Most people know who J.K. Rowling is thanks to the enormous success of her Harry Potter book series.
Can you imagine rising up from the depths of despair to become a billionaire almost overnight? Joanne Rowling’s story is the stuff Lifetime television movies are made of.
Rowling did not grow up rich like some of the previous ladies profiled in our rich bitch profile of the week series. Far from it, shortly before she became a huge success and made history as the first person to become a billionaire as a result of writing books, J.K. Rowling could barely manage to support herself and was relying on government aid. She was a single mother who, according to her biographical reports, was battling clinical depression that had reached a point where she was contemplating suicide.
Fast forward to 2008 and 43 year old J.K. Rowling has an estimated net worth of 1 billion ranking #1062 on the Forbes Billionaires list.
