This week, Apple announced that they were releasing a fourth generation of their popular low-priced iPod Shuffle music player. The new Shuffle is literally a sliver of its former self; it is now about half as big as the last generation, or about the size of a stick of Trident gum. And the player now has the added feature of being able to tell you the song and the artist–Apple is calling this feature VoiceOver.

So how do we feel about the Shuffle redesign? Honestly, I can’t say that I’m a fan. The last Shuffle was already a very tiny device. Looking at this model, dwarfed by the model’s hand, my first thought was “how quickly am I going to lose this?” There comes a point when our electronics just don’t need to get any smaller if we want to be able to keep track of them!

Moving the controls to the headphones is another change that I’m not really that fond of. While I’m not really an expert when it comes to audio equipment, I can tell you that the earbuds that come with iPods aren’t really the best out there. I have my own headphones that I like to use for listening to music on the go. Not being able to use those is pretty much a deal-killer for me.

For those who are fascinated with the overlap between the world of technology and the world of fashion, the phrase “nanotechnology swimwear fabric” is likely to grab their attention. The manufacturer of this intriguing fabric is a company called Sun Dry Swim. As the name might suggest, they sell swimwear that is designed to dry instantly.

Looking at their website, we noted right away that they don’t seem to have suits available for sale yet, though there were some simple yet cute styles shown on a few pages. The nanotech fabric apparently works by preventing the fibers from absorbing water like they do in normal swimwear fabric. Instead, when immersed, the water flows in between the fabric fibers. It beads up and out of the fabric when exposed to air, allowing it to dry quickly. I know I’m not a fan of standing around shivering in a wet swimsuit when I get out of the pool, so I for one would definitely like to try one of these beauties.

The advanced fabric apparently has other benefits as well. The colors stay bright when the dyes in other suits can fade due to UV exposure. The fibers are also extremely resistant to chlorine, which can of course damage swimsuits over time. What’s more, the company says that the swimsuit offers SPF 50 protection from sun damage. We know that we’ll be looking forward to the designs offered by this innovative company.

It’s likely that most fashionistas out there don’t place Sears at the top of the list for cutting-edge fashion. In fact, it’s quite likely that Sears isn’t anywhere to be found on such a list. However, the department store, well-known for its “softer side” advertisements, is introducing a new line of men’s clothing that we have to admit has caught our attention. There are no pictures as of yet (and to be fair, we’re not expecting much in terms of cut and style). What makes this new clothing line so interesting is the material that it will be constructed from.

Starting this spring, Sears plans to debut a new line of suits that will be called EcoGir. The line is said to be made for “fashionable males” (we’ll believe it when we see it — none of the fashionable males that we know would ever buy a suit from Sears) and made from 100% recycled materials. The noteworthy material that will be used for the creation of these suits is plastic chips from soda bottles. It is estimated that approximately 13 2-liter soda bottles will be needed to get the material for one suit. EcoGir suits will be able to be washed in your home rather than having to be taken to the dry cleaners. These will also be rather affordable for suits, costing only $150 each. While these certainly won’t be the most fashionable suits around (after all, they will basically be 100% polyester), it’s still fascinating to hear about the continuation of green trends in fashion, particularly in such a mainstream store. We look forward to seeing similar lines from more stylish sources in the future.

In our humble opinion, fashion meets function is a wonderful thing. Sure, we love to splurge on beautiful goodies as much as the next bitch, but when they actually offer us something aside from the ability to sit there and look pretty? We fall in love.

That’s why we were so excited to hear about a company called Arcadia that’s designing a system for designers to create heated jackets. We don’t know about you, but the quest for finding the perfect winter coat often boils down to a struggle between something that looks good and something that actually helps keep us warm. The idea that we could be bundling up in a system that works like the heated seats in luxury cars makes winter look a whole lot brighter.

The best thing about this step in technology is that Arcadia isn’t actually designing a coat. That’s fine by us–their background is in building fuel cells, not fashion design. While they could certainly come up with an… interesting style, we’re happy to pass. Instead, they are building a warming layer that is intended to be used under an outer shell. That of course is the coat that people will see, and it will be designed by companies that are already known for making quality coats. While this is likely to be aimed at outdoor sports enthusiasts first, not the most fashion-conscious bunch, we hope to see it utilized on the runway-quality fashions someday in the future.

While many people still consider tech to be a “guy thing”, the truth is that plenty of woman these days are quite savvy when it comes to the latest developments in gadgets. After all, we use computers, take photos, listen to music, and make cell phone calls just as much as (or more than) our male counterparts. But if you’re jotting down notes, sending off a few e-mails, surfing the Web, or watching a movie, you probably won’t mind it too much.

Asus was one of the first brands to get on this trend, but now more well-known companies such as HP and Dell are jumping on the netbook boat. With so many options available, you’re pretty likely to find a netbook that meets your needs. And the best thing about these little beauties? The price matches the size, with most available for under $500.
